Try teaching on “for size” — and find out how you’ll fit in college.
Are you serious about a career in teaching? Do you want the 4-1-1 on becoming a teacher? Then the Associated Colleges of Illinois’ (ACI) Diversity at the Blackboard Summer Academy may be just what you’re looking for. This free, week-long, residential program gives high school students who will be juniors and seniors next fall the chance to explore the realities of the teaching profession, while living and learning together on the campus of a private college or university in the Chicago area.
Open to any high school junior or senior who is seriously considering a future in teaching, ACI’s Diversity at the Blackboard Summer Academy offers a unique opportunity to try teaching on for size — and to explore how you’ll fit in when you get to college.
No ordinary summer camp.
Make the most out of your vacation days by attending the only summer camp that can start you on the road to a career in teaching and introduce you to real life on a college campus. As a Diversity at the Blackboard Summer Academy scholar, you will:
- Gain an overview of the teaching profession
- Explore the motivations for becoming a teacher
- Develop an understanding of what a teacher is, what a teacher can expect, and what knowledge and characteristics make a person an effective teacher
- Identify the challenges and the benefits of teaching in schools serving low-income and minority students
- Participate in teacher preparation courses that:
- Examine the philosophy history of education
- Reveal the social and political context of schools, including funding inequities and the impact of race and class
- Receive mentoring support from college students enrolled in teacher preparation programs
- Network with other high school students interested in teaching
- Attend a college fair where you can meet representatives from ACI’s 23 member colleges and universities located throughout Illinois
- Experience five full days of residential college life.
At the end of the Diversity at the Blackboard Summer Academy, you’ll present a capstone project to showcase what you’ve learned.
