The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program (UCCSP) was initiated five years ago by the University of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to give outstanding Chicago Public School students the opportunity to study and grow at one of the world’s foremost universities. Each year, after a rigorous application process, the program accepts 50-60 ninth graders from Chicago public high schools. Since its inception, the program has invited over 350 talented CPS students from a diverse group of high schools to the University to engage in academic enrichment activities, cultural events, college counseling and summer courses with University of Chicago faculty.

School Counselors are able to nominate up to ten 9th graders from their schools.

Nominations are due Friday, December 5th, 2008.

During the this past summer, U of C celebrated the graduation of its third class. Their alumni have performed extraordinarily well in the college admissions process. 64 participants completed applications for the University of Chicago, of which 45 were accepted. Of those students, 20 have decided to attend the University. Also, each year, the University of Chicago offers five outstanding Chicago Public Schools students a four-year, full tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago. In the past three years, eight of these scholarships have been offered to Collegiate Scholars. Alumni fare well in admission to other universities. During the last three years, 85% of have been accepted to highly competitive colleges and 71% have decided to attend these schools. Outside Chicago, these students have also chosen to attend top schools such as Cornell, Duke, Stanford, Harvard, Howard, Princeton, MIT, and Brown. In fact, Collegiate Scholars Alumni currently attend over sixty different schools in twenty-five states. The univesity is also proud to say that eight of their alumni have been awarded Gates-Millennium Scholarships, eleven have been awarded Posse Foundation Scholarships and two have been awarded QuestBridge Scholarships.
