The role of high school counselors has been redefined to support the CPS district goals for student achievement. As partners in this systemic change, counselors promote each student’s academic, career, and personal/social development, with a clear focus on goals and objectives.
To create the framework for success for every student, counselors throughout the district receive information about the ASCA National Model for School Counseling Programs. This model advocates implementing guidance programs that comprehensively and systematically assist students in establishing personal goals, accessing resources and programs, and developing plans for postsecondary education.
The counseling team in the Department of Postsecondary Education and Student Development provides professional development support for counselors and seeks feedback from them. Two-way communication—from the central office to the local school and from counselors in the field to administrators in the central office—is vital to effective practice.
To help facilitate communication, the following regular meetings are held:
- Quarterly counselor chair meetings (northside and southside). These meetings bring counselor chairs and postsecondary specialists together to exchange information on new postsecondary initiatives and review practices that will ensure that every CPS student has a viable postsecondary plan.
- Monthly area counselor leadership teams meetings (northside and southside). The purpose of these meetings for all counselors is to ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of practices and procedures that directly effect counselors and to provide updates about postsecondary benchmarks.
