The National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, created by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA), connects school counseling with current educational reform movements that emphasize student achievement and success.
The ASCA model was designed to guide a state, district or school through the process of developing, implementing and evaluating a school counseling program. The use of school data drives this model, and CPS is implementing the model at the district level.
Under the ASCA model, counselors switch their emphasis from service-centered for some students to program-centered for every student. The ASCA model is preventative in design, developmental in nature, monitors student behavior, designs a delivery system and is an integral part of the total educational program. It is driven by data and conducted in collaboration with parents/guardians, community members and other support services professionals.
