Credit Recovery

There are a number of reasons why you may find yourself “off-track” with less credits or more absences than you should have at any given point in your high school career. The good thing is that with the programs and supports listed in this section, there are a number of ways to recover. Take advantage of these programs to gain credits in a variety of settings and at flexible hours that best fit your needs and schedule, and get back on-track for graduation and/or earning your high school diploma.

Evening High School

NCLB refers to the federal No Child Left Behind law. The NCLB Evening High School Programs is designed to provide current CPS students with the academic coursework required to earn a high school diploma; there are limited locations available to “inactive” students.

Evening High School Programs began as a pilot in January 1999 to provide options for students who had dropped out or were at risk of not completing high school. Today, the program is available at 27 locations across the district and serves a diverse population of students.

Last year, more than 4,000 students received their high school diplomas due to their participation in the NCLB Evening High School Programs.

Summer School

The NCLB Summer High School Programs is a credit recovery option for students in grades 9-12th. The Summer High School program focuses on recovering core subject-area credits with instruction from certified teachers. All high schools are expected to have summer school and/or a summer program this year so that students can stay on pace or get back on track to graduate. Summer school runs from the months of June through August.

Virtual Learning

The Virtual Learning program is a computer-based credit recovery alternative for high school students, who are behind on credits to graduate. Virtual Learning offers more than 120 rigorous yet flexible online high school courses. Courses supplement local school offerings and help students achieve course credit towards graduation. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and range from introductory to advanced and cover a wide variety of subjects including English, Mathematics, History and foreign languages.
