About HSIParticipating SchoolsFAQ

Why is there a High School Investigation (HSI) Day?

  • HSI is a chance for 8th graders to get a sneak preview of the high school they will attend in the fall. It is set up to help ease 8th graders’ fears about high school and to introduce them to the teachers, counselors, and other resources that they will have access to next year.

Do students have to register to participate in HSI?

  • No. Students do not have to register to participate in HSI. All 8th-grade students will be invited to attend HSI by the high schools they are projected to attend.

Our elementary school has a prescheduled event on the day for HSI. What should we do?

  • Contact the HSI coordinator at the high school hosting HSI on the day of conflict and see if the conflict can be resolved. If it cannot be resolved, there is no penalty for not participating in HSI.

How are students getting to their projected high schools?

  • Neighborhood School
    • Students will walk if possible or elementary schools will make arrangements for transportation to their top feeder high schools.
    • If more than one high school is involved, elementary schools must identify staff to accompany students to their prospective high schools (example: one 8th-grade teacher goes with the students to Corliss High School, while the other 8th-grade teacher goes with the students to Fenger High School)
    • This is considered a field trip. He/she will report to his/her elementary school first (where attendance will be taken) and proceed to the high school with elementary staff and chaperones, one per ten students. CPS field trip policies are to be followed. Field trip permission forms and transportation are to be handled by the elementary school.

  • Schools outside of Neighborhood or Selective Enrollment, Options, Military, Small Schools
    • If the student is attending a school outside of his attendance area the parent must make arrangements to get the student to that high school for the Investigation Day. Parents should notify the elementary school of the student’s participation in the Investigation Day prior to the event and bring back proof of attendance upon completion.

What about eighth graders that will not be attending a CPS high school. What should they do?

  • Students that are not planning to attend a CPS high school do not have to participate in HSI.

When is HSI?

  • May 29, 2008, is the targeted date for the visit, but depending on an individual high school’s schedule it may take place anytime during the week of May 27, 2008, to May 30, 2008. Elementary students will be notified by the high school they have been attached to. Application Schools will notify accepted students of the HSI date.

What is the role of the Office of Specialized Services Resource Person with regards to High School Investigation Day?

  • Ensure that schools have obtained the list of the 8th grade students with disabilities projected to attend the HSI day events and have addressed the accommodations and modifications needed for students to access planned activities.
  • Offer to attend one or more planning sessions at the school to offer insight and learn about the school’s planned activities for HSI Day to help the school reduce barriers related to accessibility.
  • Make an onsite visit two weeks prior to HSI Day to address any issues related to students with disabilities.
  • Remind schools to emphasize to students and parents the importance of medical compliance (immunizations and physical exams).
  • Schedule yourself to be onsite for HSI Day to assist in any needed capacity.
  • Introduce yourself to the students and parents as an OSS representative during HSI Day.
  • Collect concerns and comments to assist with planning for next year using the HSI Day Monitoring Form.
