AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is designed to increase learning and performance in students grades 4-12. AVID is not a remedial or a college outreach program. Its mission is to ensure that B, C and D students with the desire to go to college and willingness to work hard will successfully complete college. Students take academically rigorous courses and an elective called AVID, where they receive tutoring, improve their self-image, develop critical-thinking and organizational skills, and become leaders and role-models for other students.

Chicago Public Schools is the largest urban school district in the country implementing AVID. AVID is available at a number of elementary and high schools.

Becoming an AVID School

Becoming an AVID school at the elementary or high school level requires significant commitment, readiness, and teacher training. Schools should contact us to begin the process of AVID certification, which starts with becoming an AVID affiliate. After a minimum of two years, schools move on to become certified AVID schools.
