H.S.I. Day FAQ

Why is there a High School Investigation (HSI) day?
HSI Day is a chance for 8th graders to get a sneak preview of thehigh school they will attend in the fall. It is set up to help ease 8th graders' fears about high school and to introduce them to the teachers, counselors, and other resources that they will have access to next year.

Do students have to register to participate in HSI Day?
No. Students do not have to register to participate in HSI Day. All 8th-grade students will be invited to attend HSI Day by the high schools they are projected to attend.

Our elementary school has a prescheduled event on the day for HSI Day. What should we do?
Contact the HSI Day coordinator at the high school hosting HSI Day on the day of conflict and see if the conflict can be resolved. If it cannot be resolved, there is no penalty for not participating in HSI Day.

How are students getting to their projected high schools?

Neighborhood schools
Students will walk if possible or elementary schools will make arrangements for transportation to their top feeder high schools. If more than one high school is involved, elementary schools must identify staff to accompany students to their prospective high schools (example: one 8th-grade teacher goes with the students to Corliss high school, while the other 8th-grade teacher goes with the students to Fenger high school) This is considered a field trip. He/She will report to his/her elementary school first (where attendance will be taken) and proceed to the high school with elementary staff and chaperones, one per ten students. CPS field trip policies are to be followed. Field trip permission forms and transportation are to be handled by the elementary school.
Schools outside of neighborhood or selective enrollment, options, military, small schools
If the student is attending a school outside of his attendance area the parent must make arrangements to get the student to that high school for the investigation day. Parents should notify the elementary school of the student's participation in the investigation day prior to the event and bring back proof of attendance upon completion.

What about eighth graders that will not be attending a CPS high school. What should they do?
Students that are not planning to attend a CPS high school do not have to participate in HSI Day.

When is HSI Day?
Schools may schedule HSI Day between May 1 – May 25, 2012. Elementary students will be notified by the high school they have been attached to. Application schools will notify accepted students of the date of their HSI Day.
