International leader visits CHSAS
by Caroline Connors – Beverly Review
The head of an international organization dedicated to ending hunger worldwide visited the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences (CHSAS) on July 1 [2010].
Dr. Jacques Diouf, director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, toured the school and visited with students, faculty, alumni and Chicago Public School administrators.
Although Diouf has traveled extensively throughout his career and visited many universities in the United Nations’ 191 member countries, CHSAS is the first high school he has toured in his professional capacity. It was also his first visit to Chicago as director general, he said.
“I am thrilled to see young people, for you are the present and the future, and it’s what you will be committed to that will change things,” Diouf said during a reception in the school’s farmstand. “Young people are the solution to the problems—they are the ones who will take over.”
High School Orientation Schedule
When you begin your first year at a new high school, it’s the little things that count. Do you have your class schedule? Can you find all of your classrooms? Do you remember your locker number and combination? (Is it three to the right or three to the left?) What homework is due tomorrow, next week, and next month?
We know the first few days at a new high school can be tough. And we are here to help. High School Orientation gives you a chance to walk the halls of your new school before the first day of class. You will have an opportunity to learn more about your school, visit your classrooms, walk through your class schedules, and much, much more.
High school orientations usually take place the week or so before high school begins.

Job Shadowing at Markham Courthouse
On January 20, 2010, fifteen junior students and their teacher, Jacqueline Morris from Hirsch High School’s Law and Public Safety Academy on Chicago’s south side, boarded a bus which took them to the Markham Courthouse in the south suburb of Markham, Illinois. Were they in for a wonderful learning experience!
Vera Chitty, a CPS Partnership Development Liaison, worked through Judge Michael Stuttley, Supervising Judge of the Markham Courthouse, to arrange for 15 job shadow opportunities for the high school students. The students were paired with either a judge or State’s attorney who they were introduced to during a short breakfast session before court. Each “mentor” took the student assigned to them back to their respective places in a court room. Some students sat next to judges during court cases, other students observed criminal trials, juvenile or domestic cases as they sat with a State’s attorney.
