Hispanic Heritage Month

The 2011 Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Competition will be launched in all CPS high schools September 6th. Student submissions are due Oct. 3, 2011. The competition provides scholarships, computers and other prizes to the winning students in each grade level. This year's competition is sponsored by Chicago Public Schools, the American Bottling Company, Roosevelt University and the Office of the City Treasurer.

Who May Enter

All 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders are invited to participate in the 2011 Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Competition

Essay Topic

Carlos Santana, contemporary Mexican American rock, salsa, and jazz fusion guitarist, once said, "The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart. The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace." Describe a person of Hispanic descent who, in your opinion, most exemplifies these words.

Submission Deadlines

Students: Essays must be turned in to the school Competition Coordinator no later than Monday, October 3, 2011.
Schools: The best essay from each grade level must be faxed to Central Office no later than Thursday, October 6, 2011.

Student Prizes

The four students writing the best essay in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade categories will each receive a laptop computer and printer, as well as a $5,000 Roosevelt University scholarship. The 12th grade Grand Prize winner will also receive a $1,000 College Expense Fund Award. The four students writing the second best essay in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade categories will each receive a digital camera and photo printer.

Entry Form and Instructions

Essays will be judged on originality and creativity, cultural knowledge and research, organizational structure and clarity, as well as spelling and grammar.

Awards Banquet

The competition winners, their families and their school principals and teachers will be invited to an awards banquet at which all winners will be recognized and will receive their prizes.
