Youth Business Institute (YBI) Graduation Ceremony

Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from Benito Juarez Community Academy were recognized for their completion of an 11 week Youth Business Institute (YBI). TJX Companies, founders of YBI, hosted the ceremony at Mike Ditka’s Chicago with parents and teachers in attendance. Each student was presented with a Certificate of Completion. Seven students received jobs which begin this summer, five seniors were awarded $1100 scholarships and two juniors will receive scholarships next year.

Hair Evolution: Then & Now - CTE Cosmetology Capstone Event

Forty-five Cosmetology Seniors from Dunbar and Simeon competed in this year's CTE Cosmetology Capstone event. This year's theme was "Hair Evolution: Then & Now" with a focus on 5 specific eras (20's, 40's, 60's, 70's, & 80's). The event was held at Kennedy King Theater from 6 - 8pm on Thursday, April 12, 2012, with a reception from 5-6pm. Other Cosmetology students assisted with backstage activities and coordination, and volunteering for the event.

On Friday March 23, 2012 Simeon seniors visited Armani's Hair Salon located at 2419 W. 67th St, Chicago, IL. Armani Salon is Owned and Operated by Ms. Ashli Walker, a former CPS CTE Cosmetology student who graduated in 2009. Simeon CTE Cosmetology seniors along with Ms. Walker will be partnered to provide hair and nail services to The Avalon Park Female Mentoring Group.

Academy Applications Now Being Accepted

CTE College and Career Academies (CCA) offer an exciting pathway to college and careers, giving students a head start on preparing for their futures. While in high school, in addition to taking all CPS college prep core courses like math, science and English, students participating in CCAs will experience hands-on training in their chosen industry.

CPS students in the Career and Technical Education program display their talents at Central Office.

February was Career and Technical Education (CTE) month for Chicago Public Schools. Students from a number of CPS high schools showcased some of the talents and skills that they’ve attained through the CTE program—ranging from Broadcast Technology to Culinary Arts—in the Central Office lobby at 125 S. Clark Street. The celebration of CTE programs over the month was an opportunity to recognize the important role CTE plays in preparing students for college and career success.

Tricoci University of Beauty Culture hosts Simeon Students for Job Shadow Day

The Tricoci University of Beauty Culture hosted 25 students at two of their sites. Simeon Cosmetology students visited the Harlem Campus where each student was paired with a mentor from the college's Esthetics program and learned first hand about careers in the cosmetology industry and the necessary skills and steps to succeed.
