Home » News LPSA Students Discuss Key Policy Issues with Congressional Staff
Each year, the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago (CRFC) gives the Bill of Rights in Action Award to individuals and organizations who, because of their professional commitment and community involvement, provide exemplary models of citizenship for our nation’s young people. This year’s recipients were Senator Richard J. Durbin and General Electric and the GE Foundation. On Tuesday, October 27th CRFC hosted a benefit to celebrate the winners. Students involved in CRFC programs from across the city were invited to attend the event including students participating in the Law and Public Safety Academy (LPSA) at Mather High School.
LPSA teacher Pat McAvoy noted that one of the most exciting parts of the evening was a pre-event round table discussion held by several of Senator Durban’s key staff members including Kai Love Davis, Clarisol Duque, Jeffery Esser and David McDermott. LPSA students Fatimina Amin, Rasim Sulkjanovic, and Jocelyn Sanchez were able to participate in this lively discussion of key policy issues. Ms. McAvoy also noted that her students were awed at getting to meet Diane Wood, a judge serving in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals (and on the short-list for the Supreme Court vacancy filled by Sonia Sotamayor).
Great Job!
And big thanks to CRFC for inviting our Law and Public Safety Academy students.
