Make a plan:
  • Read every day (newspapers, magazine, books). Look up new words.
  • Go see a tutor to improve or advance your reading, writing and math skills.
  • Attend Saturday and summer programs at school.
  • Get active and stay active in an after-school activity.
  • Explore your interests. What subjects do you like? What careers do you want to know more about?
  • In eighth Grade, take Algebra if available.
  • In eighth Grade, shadow a high school student at a high school you’re interested in attending.
  • Attend the CPS High School Fair.
  • Ask for help if you are having a hard time with classes or if you are having problems in or out of school.

  • Use Choices Explorer to find out about different careers that fit with your interests.
  • Identify the high school courses you will need to graduate high school and get to college.
  • Look at high schools with GEAR UP or AVID.
  • Choose a high school.
  • Plan the courses you will take your freshman year.
  • Get ready:
    • Learn what financial aid means.
    • Talk with your parents about your plans and about saving for college.
    • Apply for a social security number if you don’t have one already.
    • Talk with your school counselor or an adult you trust about your plans for college.
