Home » Prepare Yourself Roommates
There are bound to be challenges to living with someone, whether in a dorm room or an apartment. You can avoid some of the worst experiences by sharing, being courteous, respecting others, and accepting others for who they are.
Here are some pointers from the College Board:
- Discuss important issues and establish rules. Communicate early, often, and openly.
- Be respectful. Think about your roommate’s feelings. Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink, borrow things without asking, or plan a party in the apartment without consulting your roommate.
- Be willing to compromise. If you’re a slob and your roommate is a neat freak, make an effort to keep the shared areas, like the bathroom, clean. If you like to study to music and she needs quiet, use your headphones.
- Be courteous. One good turn might lead to another. If you behave politely, your roommate may too.
- Keep an open mind. A person you might not expect may turn out to be a friend for life.
