Community Services Block Grant Scholarship (Chgo. Dept. of Human Services)

The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Scholarship program provides financial assistance for low-income students enrolled in secondary education programs. Students enrolled in an Illinois college, university or vocational training program by September 8, 2008, may qualify for a scholarship. Recipients must have primary residence in Chicago and meet established income guidelines. Scholarship funds may be applied to tuition, uniforms, fees related to study and book costs.

Western Illinois University Black Alumni Committee Scholarship Award

Deadline: August 1

The Western Illinois University (WIU) Black Alumni Committee Scholarship Award is intended to financially assist deserving, qualified, African American WIU students. For new freshman, they must be currently enrolled at WIU; for all other WIU students, they must be currently enrolled, have a minimum of 24 credit hours completed with at least a 2.5 GPA.

$250 minimum amount     Restrictions:  Ethnicity

Chicago Neighbors United

Deadline: August 18

This scholarship is intended to supplement other financial assistance and are awarded to high school seniors who wish to further their educational endeavors. Students must: be a legal resident of the 27th Ward at the time of submission (proof of residency must be submitted); be accepted to an accredited college/university (acceptance letter or registration forms must be submitted); return nominee application along with other requirements; submit proof of community service hours; and complete the essay question (see website for details).

High School Election Judges

Deadline: October 28

High School students can learn first-hand about the democratic process and earn money for passing the training and serving as an election judge on election day. Student judges must: be a high school Junior or Senior in the fall of 2008; have permission from a parent or guardian and their school principal; have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; be a US Citizen and a Cook County Resident; fill out a first judge application; attend and pass an election judge training.

Ron Brown Scholar Program

Deadline: November 1

The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify students who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential and make an impact on their communities through service to others. Students must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents, and a current high school senior at the time of application. Applicants should demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership ability, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.

$10,000 annually     Restrictions:  Ethnicity
